In keeping with my new easygoing persona, I sent in Oliver's 1st middle school application with his answers exactly as he wrote them. My first impulse, which I unfortunately acted on, was to suggest he revise them to sound a little less complain-y (he lamented being forced to do things other than play video games) and more impressive (he didn't mention any of the activities that reflect what I consider to be his unusual talents). When his face fell and he said "So you think what I wrote is bad?", I realized my mistake and backtracked. They were his answers, not mine, I said, and it was silly of me to have momentarily thought he should write something more like what I might want to write. Seeing that crushed look go away was well worth forfeiting any (dubious) potential benefit of interfering!
